Shimmy Shimmy

A poem by Ruth Boston

You begin, arms poised
As still as a statue.
The music begins
You turn, swirl and sway
Like an unfurling flower.
Coins rattle; your feet slap the floor
A wisp of netted fabric
Twists, tracing patterns above your head.
The ending is nigh
The audience is mesmerised.
As you flow to a halt
A fusion of colour and grace.
A masterpiece

LUU belly dancing society

The Leeds belly dancing society was formed in the January of 2005. Even though lessons have been going on at the university for several years now. We dance the Raks Sharqi style of belly dancing, which is an Egyptian, Oriental Dance. It has 3 main forms Folk, Classical and Baladi.

On Thursday the 25th of November 2004 we performed our 1st show (Mystique of the Middle East). This show was in aid of Womankind worldwide. We had a group of arabic drummers perform with us. Also Wendy (our teacher) and some of her older students performed some beautiful dances.

Since then we have danced at many charity events such as Mayhem, York RAG Parade and Light Night, see our past events) In 2007 we also put on ELEMENTS bellydancing show, with the rythmic force that is Samba York, this show raised over £400 of the charity WOMANKIND.
